Honesty

AA and NA programs are not just about being clean and sober. They entail a new way of life. Getting honest is very hard for addicts. Whether it seems that lying is the easier way, or we just don't want to face the consequences, telling the truth is often not on our agenda. But how freeing it can be to tell the truth, and just let the cards fall where they will. When we stop holding on to how we want to be perceived and just be ourselves, we have nothing left to hide. We don't have to spend our lives being twisted out of shape because we are trying to appear the way we believe others want us to appear. If someone doesn't like us for who we are, then so be it. It doesn't have to affect the way we feel about ourselves. Part of this honesty includes being honest about our addictions. It may seem shameful to us that we have used, or that we  need to start over again. But by being honest we can go forward.
